Nissan Repair: 1998 Nissan Pathfinder - alternator?, nissan pathfinder, high beam

Question
While driving my 98 Nissan Pathfinder, my ABS and air bag light came on, also lights in dashboard dimmed and car felt like it was going to stall out. Thankfully I was close to home and made it back. I changed my battery about 1 year ago. Do you think its the alternator? I am in the process of looking for a trustworthy mechanic who will ot rip me off, which is why I need some advice. Truck has 142000 miles and alternator was never changed.
Thanks!

Answer
Hi Ken -

First of all, turn the headlights on and try to start the car. If the headlights are dim, then recharge the battery bfore going further with the diagnosis. If the lights are strong, and it cuts out as soon as you try to start it, then replace the battery.

Once the battery is replaced, then it would be a good idea to check the alternator. With the car running, headlights on high beam, you should be reading 14 volts.

Batteries usually last a couple years, and because you haven't replaced the alternator yet, I would venture to say you will need a new one.

If you are so inclined, you may get a quote, let me know, and I can tell you if the price is in line. My email is cjiwash@yahoo.com

Hope this helps -
