Nissan Repair: auto transmission Nissan D21 Pick up 2WD, transmission oil change, torque converter

Question
Today the auto transmission on my 1993 Nissan D21 Pick-up (158,000 miles) gave up the ghost. No prior warning of problems. Engine reved but no longer in drive in any gear. Has had 1 transmission oil change some years back. Current transmision oil clean, up to level, no smell.
Could the torque convertor have suddenly given up or am I looking at taking to a transmission shop?
Many thanks for any advice.
Dave

Answer
David,

Yes, it sounds like the torque converter or pump has failed.  You are looking at a transmission rebuild or at a minimum you need a replacement from a wrecking yard.  Remember it is a 1993 and this is 2009.  Ten years is about normal for a transmission so you have gotten your money out of it and more.  Cottman has been good to me if you are going the rebuilt route.
