Nissan Repair: antenna-broke off, antenna mast, nissan altima

Question
I have 95 Nissan altima, the piece that sticks out (silver stick outside the trunk)broke. I can't seem to find out how to get the rest out inside the truck. I was told it's an automatic antenna, can I just replace the silver stick part?

Answer
Barbara,

If you are lucky you can turn the radio on and pull on the broken part of the antenna until the plastic cable that feeds it comes out of the hole.  Before you do this remove the chrome nut on top of the fender.  Then, put the cable from the new antenna mast in the hold as the radio is turned off to get the motor to feed the new antenna cable in.  After the mast is pulled in reinstall the nut.  If it has been a long time since the antenna was broken the motor might be burnt out.  If you hear noise when you turn your radio on and off like the antenna motor sound then the motor and relay are most probably good.  Second, if the cable is broken off inside you can still use a new mast and not the whole motor assembly.  It is just a matter of removing the antenna motor and disassembling it and removing the broken parts before fishing teh new cable back into the unit.  Pep Boys has the antenna mast replacements for cheap.  Something like $20 bucks.
