Nissan Repair: 2001 Maxima brakes, brake fluid reservoir, master cylinder

Question
I have recently replaced the back brake pads and calipers.  The front pads are about six months old.  The problem is that the brake pedal is now very soft.  The car stops but the pedal travels almost to the floor.  According to the mechanic the system has been bled and the master cylinder is working properly. There are not apparent leaks in the lines.  The mechanic is at a loss.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Lou -

Couple things to check -

Was the hand brake adjusted? Sometimes this adjustment helps the pedal level. With new pads sometimes the pedal will feel softer because of the extra lining. As pads wear down, normally the driver cannot feel the difference until the pads are replaced.

Other than that, my only suggestion is to loosen the bleeder screws for both sides, open the brake fluid reservoir and let it sit for an hour or two. Ensure you have sufficient brake fluid at all times.

Hope this helps -
