Nissan Repair: Shifter linkage, 2004 nissan pathfinder, nissan pathfinder

Question
2004 Nissan Pathfinder- automatic transmission... It takes numerous attempts for the shifter linkage release button to disengage so I can place the shifter in gear. I press the brake pedal as usual, push the button in as usual, however it has become tempermental.  Is there any way to circumvent the system or how do I repair the problem?  Thanks.

Answer
John,

Either the shifter solenoid is sticking or the brake pedal switch that activates the solenoid is defective.  You will need to remove the shifter cover to get to the solenoid and the brake pedal switch is easy to get to.  First, bridge the brake pedal switch, not the one for the brake light but the one for the shift interlock. The way to corcumvent the problem is to remove the access cover for shifter release and insert a screw to hold the plunger down.  Now, the car will shift without the brake being applied.  But, froma safety perspective, if there are kids around, the Pathfinder can be shifted out of park without having to put the brake on.
