Nissan Repair: Power Steering squeak, power steering pump, power steering pump pulley

Question
I have had some constant squeak coming from my engine. I have replaced all the drive belts as well as an idler pulley whose bearings were bad (and I thought that it was the source of the squeak). My friend knew a trick to trouble shoot a supposed squeaky pulley: he sprayed the front of each pulley with WD-40 and when he sprayed the power steering pump pulley, the noise stopped (for about 10-15 minutes).
I loosened the belt and was going to take the pulley off and replace or re-grease it, but I realized that P/S pulleys have no bearings; they are press-on. I tightened the belt back nice and snug, and still I hear a constant squeak.
I don't think the pump is leaking, what can be the problem?

Thanks,
Derek

Answer
Hi Derek -

The power steering pulley does have a bearing, however it is on the pump side, and pressed into the housing. If the oil was sprayed on the housing side (and only on the housing side) of the shaft and the noise went away, then you can deduct it is the bearing. Another trick I do is to get a long screwdriver, and while the engine is running, hold it to the pump, hold the other side against your ear, and you should hear the squeal loudly. Use this method on various areas of your engine and you should find the source.

Hope this helps
