Nissan Repair: 1998 Nissan Maxima brake lights, nissan maxima, brake switch

Question
Hello Calvin!

The brake lights have stopped working on my 98' Maxima.  Headlights work,
taillights work and fuse replacement has not done anything to restore it to its
former glowing glory.  I have yet to try and replace the bulbs, but I figure the
likelihood of all three brake bulbs going at once is highly unlikely.  I've been
looking under the steering wheel column to see if there is a break light switch
I can get to and had some luck wiggling things around, but nothing ever lasts
too long.

Any help or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated, as I've got
an appointment with the Nissan lads and would love to save the cash.

cheers,

Connor

Answer
Hi Connor -

This could be a really inexpensive fix -

Follow your brake pedal up towards your brake switch area. There should be a small round rubber pad that presses in to a hole on the bracket that rests against the plunger of the brake switch. If that is missing or broken, replace that and you should be good to go. Just press it in the hole.

The hardest part of replacing this is accessing the area. It will help if you remove the plastic housing below the steering wheel first. Be careful, some models have two of these pads, one right above the other.

Cost at any auto store is - about $2

Hope this helps -
