Nissan Repair: Turn signal blinking twice the normal speed, nissan d21, turn signal switch

Question
QUESTION: Hi,

I have a 1986 Nissan D21 pickup. All of a sudden, the left turn signal started blinking/clicking at double speed. It has happened before and the cause was a dead bulb (brake light). This time - all bulbs are working but the left front turn signal appears somewhat dimmer than the right. I replaced the bulb and looked for corrosion (couldn't see any) but the problem still persists. Short of replacing the flasher, any other ideas? Everything has been working great for years.

Thanks in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Jakob -

Is the light still dimmer than the right side? If it is, have you checked all connections and terminals? Ensure it is the right bulb (consult the manual or call the auto parts store). The wrong bulb sometimes is the culprit.

Let me know how it goes -

QUESTION: Hi Calvin,

Aloha and thank you for your reply.

Yes, the left side is still dimmer. I replaced the bulb with an identical one (same brand and part #) that has been there (and working) for years. Will double-check connections and terminals. Didn't see anything obvious during the first pass.

Thanks again.

Answer
HI jakob -

OK. Don't forget to check the ground connection too. A faulty ground could also cause the dimmer bulb. Perhaps some moisture got to it.

In my travels I have also seen the terminals of the turn signal switch go bad, causing what you are experiencing. That one is harder to check, of course, but should not be overlooked.

Good luck -
