how do I check the automatic transmission fluid level?  No manual. 196K miles never serviced.  Slipping in reverse and makes a noise shifting from 1st to 2nd.  It is automatic.  Never did anything to the transmission.

The dipstick tube is located close to the firewall.  You would do well to have the fluid changed along with the filter.  But, if it is slipping in reverse and making noise between first and second would indicate transmission problems.  You could change the filter and fluid and see how it goes.  But, signs point to something more serious.  Also, I have had good success with Cottman Transmission shops.  So, your choice here on who will be looking at it...
