Nissan Repair: ignition switch, steering wheel, wrecking yard

Question
Hi Von,
I recently asked about replacement of the shift lever cable on my 94 Nissan. I forgot to ask about the replacement of my ignition switch. Do I need to remove the steering wheel or can I work around it? Also, is it possible to replace only the keyed portion or am I looking at replacing something more than that when ordering parts? The van starts but something is broken inside. I can start it okay but can also remove the key when done. Any information will be helpful.

Thanks, Tim

Answer
Tim,

The steering wheel has to come off to get access to the hole that unlocks the steering wheel.  I would purchase a wrecking yard steering column and just replace yours as a cheaper alternative.  A locksmith will charge much more than just getting a steering column with all the components installed.
