Nissan Repair: Transmission not shifting, radiator fluid, fuel hoses

Question
I just spent several hours removing the air intake manifold on my 1994
Maxima to replace some fuel hoses and vacuum lines. I also replaced all the
spark plugs and wires while I was at it. The reason I did all of this is b/c I had
a small fuel leak in one of the lines under the manifold that was causing a
surging in the engine when at idle. That problem is now solved, but the car
won't shift out of first gear. Do you have any ideas of where I can look for the
problem given that is has just arisen after these repairs? As a side note, I did
not have one of the coolant hoses hooked up to the intake manifold when I
initially cranked the vehicle, which resulted in a significant amount of radiator
fluid being spilled down the back of the engine onto the transmission case -
could this be part of the problem?

Thanks,
Carrie

Answer
Carrie,

I would remove the connector to the transmission harness, down where the coolant leaked and blow out any excess with compressed air and apply a little WD40 to dry it out and try again.  Other causes could not do this since it would shift out of first with the vacuum sensor unplugged.  So, I feel you are right in it being related to getting wet.
