Nissan Repair: Nissan Terano, lease holder, trans fluid

Question
Hi I have a 1990 model Nissan Terano, Auto, Dist. I took it onto a small private island to do some work for the lease holder, while I was there the trans started to slip, I thought it had some how leaked the trans fluid, but that was ok. When I got back in, it took of fine, we thought it was just a glitch, then it happened again 500m down the track after letting it cool for a few minutes we started it again and it went. We had to get back to camp, so when it started to slip I would turn it of and then start it again straight away and it would go a further 300m as if by turning the ignition on and off would reset something. I had to leave the car on the island and come home. is there anything that I could try to do myself that might save me a expensive recovery bill?. Any help would be grate.
 Thank you

Answer
Dom,

Other than changing the fluid there is nothing you can really do.  The comptuer or one of the servos is probably messed up.  Turning the vehicle off and waiting frees up the problem and then it comes back again.  Anyway, your problem is going to be one of the above.  Usually, the transmission will lock itself in one gear to protect the transmission and you should be able to drive it to a shop.
