Nissan Repair: weird noise coming from passenger side, nissan maxima se, 2005 nissan maxima

Question
Hi... I have a 2005 nissan maxima se that I bought used in the beginning of may. About 3 weeks ago I stard hearing a noise coming from the right side of my car whenever I go over a bump or any harsh road. I don't know how to explain the noise but it sounds to me like I don't have shocks on either the right side passenger or the rear. The noise only happens when I hit a bump or go over a unpaved road. The noise actually seemed to get worse. Would u be able to tell me if this is my shocks? Or what kindof problem it is? Like I said I can't explain the noise I hear too well..but it sounds like a tapping noise when I hit a bump. Its a harsh tapping noise though. What should I do?

Answer
Hi Jennifer -

Sounds like suspension or steering related. I would suggest to check the following:

Tie rod ends
Idler arm or center link
Strut mounts
Ball joints
Lower control arm bushing

Any one of these would cause the noise you speak of. I have listed them in order of probability.

Do you have a competent mechanic?

Hope this helps
