Nissan Repair: 1998 Nissan Sentra Halfshaft Replacement, strut bolts, nissan sentra

Question
What are the steps to removing and replacing the halfshafts on a 1998 Nissan Sentra with a 1.6L and an automatic?  Also, do you have the torque settings for reinstallation?

Answer
Ryan,

Get a Haynes Manual for photographs and step by step directions.

Basically, the car has to be placed on stands or a lift and the front wheels have to be removed.  You will need a special socket for the CV nuts on the outside of the brake rotor.  Now, you can disconnect the tierod at the spindle and unbolt the spindle from the strut.  Also, you will want to have a large pry bar to pop the CV driveshaft out of the transmission on driver's side.  The passenger side will require the intermediate shaft be unbolted from the CV and removal is the same after that.  Installation is the reverse of disassembly.  Do, make sure to have the car on good stands and the wheels chocked and have a spotter while you work and do not over extend the brake lines as they will start to leak.   Torque the main axle nut to 175 to 210 foot pounds. Two strut bolts to 75 to 90 ft lbs.  I go to the low side due to the age of the car and the propensity for the Japanese to use recycled steel.  You do not want to get all the way done and strip or break a bolt.
