Nissan Repair: Problem similar to this one... however the solution did not work for us!, battery check, fuel filters

Question
QUESTION: This person wrote this in December of 2007....  "I am trying to fix my sisters 1996 Nissan PU.  It first showed several code at Autozone.  Kwick Lube did an injector clean.  The problem we are having is very frustrating.  After driving several miles, the vehicle begins to act as though it is starving for gas, it looses power the jerks and goes again.  There is no particular speed that it does this.  Say id you were traveling 60 mph and the traffic in front began to slow, so you come off the accelerator for just a short time, then give it gas again to maintain your speed, it will loose power then all of a sudden accelerate.  After injector cleaning at Kwick Lube, remembered they did not reset the computer, so I did that today and check engine went out.  Took back to Autonomies; was advised the only code showing was for the throttle sensor.  Bought one, disconnected battery, replace with a new one, reconnected battery, check engine light went back out, but problem still remains.  Please help!
Thank you, Pat"     This is the exact same issue we are having.  However.... the solution you gave for Pat is not our issue... didn't solve it.

We were told it was in the distributor.  We replaced the complete distributor... the whole thing.  The pickup is doing the exact same thing.  The check engine light has been on for the past 2 years... never an actual issue found as to why it is on.  The computer diagnostic done prior to changing the distributor.

Our van had died 3 days prior to the pickup.  It had a fuel pump issue.  We changed the fuel filters on both vehicles at the same time (after the pickup started acting up).

The pickup is quite frustrating... and we need it fixed.  We've already put 300.00 in parts into it... to have it do the exact same thing and no improvement.

ANSWER: Kristie,

If you have replaced the distributor and it is still doing the cut-out thing you need to find out what the codes are.  I have seen a cracked air intake hose, the one from the air meter to the throttle body, cause the problem due to cracks opeing up and closing.  Unmetered air will cause the sputtering.  But, get the codes and email me back and let me know what they are...

QUESTION: This is what was written in the report.  Vehicle is cutting out at mid throttle, after warmed up.  Ignition module, coil assembly, with reluctor all built inside of distributor assm.  Cannot test coil out put voltage because of unitized ignition system.  Scanned and found code PO340 cam position sensor, part of distributor.

Answer
Kristie,

I would suspect the replacement distributor.  With a timing light you can see if the plugs are firing by placing the inductive lead on each wire.  The cam position sensor is the distributor since it does both the injectors and the plugs.  The shutter sheel provides information on both to the computer.
