Nissan Repair: Nissan Pulsar 91 N13 Oil Leak, valve cover gasket, oil leaks

Question
My Pulsar has a few minor oil leaks. It leaves a drop everytime i park. Is there any cheap additives that fix this problem? Someone told me that i should change the PCV. Would changing the PCV do anything? and are they expensive?

Answer
Hi Nick -

First thing I would do is check the oil sending unit. This should be located on the engine block near the rear of the engine. Look for a hex shaped device with one or two wires attached to it. If it is wet with oil, chances are that is your culprit. The switch is not expensive, maybe $10 max.

Another cause could be the valve cover gasket. This will drip down the engine block as well. A little more expensive, maybe about $100 including labor.

Additives that claim to stop oil leaks either make the oil thicker so that it doesn't drip that much, or it conditions the gaskets to expand, creating a better seal. The latter would be the best option, only if you have a leak coming from the camshaft seal, or main seal at the rear of the engine. It will not help the oil sending unit, or valve covers.

So, I guess the key to this is to determine exactly where the oil leak is coming from.

Best way to do this is to get an engine cleaner, clean the entire engine, then run it and see where the oil is dripping from.

Please get back to me after you have done this, so we can move on and find the problem.

Aloha
