Nissan Repair: 99 Nissan Quest wont start, spark plug wire, nissan quest

Question
For the last week the van smelled like gas each time it was driven, bad enough that I left the windows down.  Last Thursday I filled the gas tank up and then Thursday evening when my husband was driving it it stalled lost all power and wouldn't start again.  He towed it home but even jumping it won't work.  It cranks but that's it.  He has pulled the fuel filter and it is  fine, you can hear the fuel pump trying to pump.  The only other thing that has been wrong is the check engine light has been on for months.  I had a complete tune up 2 months ago because the check engine light was on.  It was still on after the tune up.  I really need help as soon as possible since this is our only car because someone stole our pickup 3 weeks ago.  Please help.

Answer
Hi Cheryl -

Can you take a spark test for me -

Remove one spark plug wire, insert a screwdriver in there until it contacts the terminal inside the boot securely. Hold the screwdriver shaft about 1/4" away from any metal surface of the vehicle and have someone crank the engine (do not touch any metal surface while doing this). Is there a spark jumping between the 2 metal surfaces?
