Nissan Repair: Is it OK to install used ECM on Maxima?, air control valve, haynes manual

Question
We have a 2001 Maxima that the dealer says needs a new ECM and Idle Air Control Valve. That will cost a bundle to have THEM do the work. We are considering buying used parts and having them installed. Are the used parts reliable? The car belongs to our daughter who is in college and 3 1/2 hours away. We need to be able to depend on the car as she drives back and forth.

Thanks,
Laura

Answer
Laura,

Yes, to the used ECM and no to the used idle air control valve.  Also, I would have them verify the ECM is indeed bad as they do not usually go bad.  If the car was jump started or if the alternator or battery was defetive for a time in recent history would I think the ECM was defective.  Have them show you the codes for the ECM.  I will tell you they will not warranty their work on the used ECM if they are a dealer since they want the cash for selling you their unit.  But, if the car runs and you can get it home you could replace both yourself.  The ECM in behind a panel, under the dash, driver's side.  Remove the plastic panel by the gas pedal, on the console and you will see it.  The idle air control valve is on the intake manifold towards the back on the driver's side of the engine.  Get a Haynes Manual and with a set of metric tools you are good to go.
