Nissan Repair: auto troubleshooting, neutral safety switch, electrical analysis

Question
When a car does not start, what are the troubleshooting methods that should take place for effective analysis? In other words what steps do you take? Check Battery first, etc.

Answer
Rick,

First, check and charge the battery.

Next, drive the car down to Autozone or Checker and have them perform an electrical analysis.

If the car does not start after you have charged the battery check the fuse to the alternator at the positive battery cable.  If that is good check the neutral safety switch.  Try starting the car and shift from neutral to park.  If that does not work you are probably looking for a starter.
