Nissan Repair: Gauges on my 1997 Nissan Maxima, nissan maxima, pencil eraser

Question
I just bought a used maxima and i notice my gauges aren't working sometimes and when they do work they "jump" instead of rising gradually is this a serious problem and how do i repair it?

Answer
Derek,

It is either the connector to the cluster or the transformer that drives the unit.  Usually, you can remove the cluster and use a number 2 pencil eraser to clean the contacts on both the connector and the connection on the cluster.  Lightly shine up the connections and blow off the dust.  Reinstall and you should be fine.  If this does not do the trick you are looking at getting the transformer that steps the voltage down on the back of the cluster.  A wrecking yard unit is the most cost effective way to go.  A speedometer speciality shop will cost several hundred dollars for the repair.
