Nissan Repair: gear shift, auto nissan, diesel auto

i have a 1992 2.7 diesel auto nissan terranno. wen the engine is cold the rev counterstays on 0 then shoots upto 6000 immediately. the gears will not engage 4th and if it does it changes straight down to 3rd sporadically. the od is on so the truck is not engaging overdrive

The transmission will need to be examined to see if the valve body is devective.  Probably a servo defective and if not the clutch for 4th is slipping.  If this is the case the torque converter will not lock either.  If your tach is electronic probably means it needs to be lubricated.
