Nissan Repair: Nissan catalytic converter, oxygen sensors, auto parts stores

Question
Calvin, I need to replace the catalytic converter on my 97 Nissan pickup. Standard cab, 2WD, 5 spd. I've been corresponding with Von Sudderth on my basic problem, which is getting thru the emissions inspection here in Maryland, and have replaced the oxygen sensors (and the cracked exhaust manifold) but am still getting the "catalyst efficiency" ODBII code. My problem is finding the replacement part. The cat on my truck is 16" long, but all I can find online are units that are 13" and 17 5/8". The folks at my local auto parts stores are no help, they don't carry any cats for my vehicle. All I can think to do is to get the 17" unit and cut and splice the pipe near the flange to allow for the added length. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Answer
HI Eric -

I do not think there would be a problem with the added length. There should be enough play to accept the 17 5/8 length of the new cat. Your P/U is only 11 years old, what is the mileage? Seems kind of premature to replace the cat.

Thanks and aloha
