Nissan Repair: Nissan Pulsar N13 Timing Belt Replacement, nissan pulsar n13, damper pulley

Question
Dear Sir
I would like to know if you could assist me with some information on replacing the timing belt on this model and how often should it be replaced.
I would be most grateful if you could assist me. I am a 63 year old pensioner and cannot afford to pay to have it done. I have worked on many of my children cars over the years but this is the first time I have had to change a timing belt on this model. The old belt is still working and I would like to change it if only for safety.
Regards
Richard. E.

Answer
Hello Richard -

First of all, I recommend the timing belt be replaced every 50,000 miles if you have a manual shift, and 75,000 if you have an automatic.

As for replacement, you will need an array of tools - can you get your hands on them?

Aside from the basic metric wrenches, a flex head ratchet, sockets deep and shallow, and extensions are important. You will need a tool, like a strap wrench to remove the damper pulley. I can refer you to a great site to guide you through replacing the belt, rather than me trying to explain without diagrams. Go to www.autozone.com,
and enter your vehicle. There should be diagrams and instructions.

be ready to spend quite some time, especially if you have never replaced a timing belt before. The important part is ensuring that the engine is at TDC when the belt is removed, and stays that way as you install the new belt. Even one notch off, the car will not re-start. Aligning the timing marks (in 3 places) is key. The diagrams should show you where and how.

Hope this helps -
thanks and aloha
