Nissan Repair: Replacing speedo cable on 1985, 720 diesel dual cab ute, silicone lubricant, noisy cables

Question
How do we swap a speedo cable on a 1985, 720 nissan dual cab ute? The old one has snapped and we bought a replacement cable but need to know how to go about swapping them over.

Answer
Hi Amanda -

The swap is done from behind the instrument panel. Remove the instrument panel and find the speedometer cable connection behind the speedometer dial. Unsnap the cable end and pull it out. If it has broken, the other piece has to be removed by undoing the transmission side of the cable, and pulling it out from there. In either case, the replacement cable has to be inserted from the speedometer end. Before threading it through, you need to lubricate the cable with a high quality silicone lubricant, or graphite. Using WD40, or normal grease will leave residue and cause noisy cables later on.

Hope this helps -
