Nissan Repair: transmission grinding, vantage point, bellhousing

Hi, i have a 91 maxima and i'm hearing a grinding noise when the car is in park and neutral. It sounds like it's coming from the starter side of the tranny.

It could be that the flexplate is coming apart and when it is unloaded it is scraping on the inside of the bellhousing.  There is an inspection plate under the car that you can remove to gain access to see what it going on.  Also, the starter can be removed to get a visual from that vantage point too.  You will probably end up taking the transmission out to correct the problem.
