Nissan Repair: 98 Nissan 200sx fuse..., nissan 200sx, dash lights

Question
QUESTION: Hi I have a 98 Nissan 200sx and the fuse for my dash lights and tail lights keeps blowing out at random times. My brake lights work fine. Any idea on why this happens. I have been pulled over cause i didn't realize they were out because the headlights still work fine. And help would be great. Thanks for your time.

ANSWER: AJ,

The headlight switch is probably shorting out blowing the fuse.  If you have not used the headlights, during the day, does the fuse stay good?  I would really think the headlight switch since it is the master for all the lights, including the instrument lights.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Yes the fuse stays good cause neither of the lights mentioned above (except the brake lights) are used during the day. This only happens while the tail lights and dash lights are on. The fuse doesn't blow right away when i turn on the lights for the night it just happens randomly once they are on.

Answer
AJ,

From cheap to most expensive.  Replace the dimmer for the instrument cluster first.  If that does not solve the problem my bet, again, is the headlight switch.  I have replaced way too many of these for internally shorting.  It is an easy replacement on a Nissan since you only use a screwdriver.  The wheel does not have to come off to get to the headlight switch.  Just remove the column cover and you are there.
