Nissan Repair: Shifter problems in a 2000 Maxima, shift lock, 400 bucks

Question
My maxima has problems shifting into gear. Depending on the time it shifts into drive or reverse like normal.  Other times it doesn't come out of park.  Then I have to press down on the shift lock button to make it go into the different gears.  Dealer says I need a new shifter and the part will cost like 400 bucks.

Answer
David,

My 2000 Maxima did the same thing and all I did was disassemble it and lubricate it and it has been working fine for a couple of years now.  The shifter gets gummed up and needs to be cleaned and lubricated.  The console has to be removed to get to the shifter internals.  If it is really screwed up source one from a wrecking yard or check on line.
