Nissan Repair: Cuboots on a 2000 Nissan Maxima, cv boots, nissan maxima

Question
I went to the dealer today and he told me that I need new cuboots.  I'm not really sure what they do but they have to do with the front wheel drive and keeping some parts in the front wheel drive lubricated.  Do you know any thing about cuboots?

Answer
Hi David -

I assume you are talking about Constant Velocity boots, or CV boots. They hold grease so that the joint can be not only lubricated, but clean. Once that boot is cut, the joint is compromised. My suggestion is to replace the entire half shaft. When you add up the cost of labor just to do the boots, opposed to simply replacing the shaft, it is well worth it.

Hope this helps -
