Nissan Repair: 2005 Xterra fuel tank, technical service bulletins, vent line

Question
hello
the check engine light, has been coming on and off on my 05 Xterra for months. I stopped and had the code checked and was told that it was my gas cap. but they didn't have the right replacement cap at that time. So I went on my way and never changed cap. Now 2 weeks ago when fueling up  gas  started spitting back out of tank and it shuts off gas pump takes 10 minutes or more to fill tank. ??? can you help?

Answer
Mike,

A couple of things here on fuel systems and the computer code for the gas cap.  This code can be for leaky fuel lines so make sure there are no loose or rotten lines.  The fuel backing up a the fuel neck is caused by a kinked vent line from the tank or a blockage.  So, first get a new cap and then reset the code and see if the fuel problem goes away.  If not then you need to look at the fuel filler nect to the tank and related lines.  That is where a backup would occur since the large pipe allows fuel to enter and the smaller line allows air to vent.  If the air can't vent you get the spitting back thing you describe.  Also, there were no technical service bulletins or recalls for your fuel system on a 2005 Xterra so this is not that common for your vehicle.
