Nissan Repair: 1999 Nissan Sentra Left Front End noise, nissan sentra, brake caliper

Question
We have a 1999 Nissan Sentra with 158,000 miles on it. The car runs fairly well. However, when I turn the car to the left or right while moving, I hear a fairly laud ticking noise coming from (I believe) the left front of the car. It is definately not engine noise. The breaks and tires are ok.
WHen I am driving on a straight highway, 55 MPH and take my hands off the steering wheel, the car still tracks in a straight line, so I am confident the wheels are aligned properly. Do you have any suggestions as to what this ticking noice could be, and how I could repir it, the easiest, most cost effective way? I was thinking I have may have a worn axcel, but, it is only an assumption on my part. Is there anyway for me to validate if the axcel is the problem?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Jeff -

Is the ticking noise constant while the vehicle is moving? If, so then it could be your CV joint. Replaceing the axle would be the most economical. Get a rebuilt axle shaft. If the noise comes out only once -

This could be a few things -
First of all, I would check the steering linkage, namely the tie rod ends. To check this, lift the car up until the wheels do not touch the ground. Grasp the tires on each side and try to move it back and forth as if you are trying to turn the wheel. If there is play, or if you hear that same clicking sound, then you have found the problem.

Other things you can check are the struts, ball joints, even a loose brake caliper or axle nut.

Let me know
