Nissan Repair: PO440 Code, nissan altima, charcoal canister

QUESTION: I have a 1998 Nissan Altima.  The check engine light came on.  I checked it and code PO440 Evap Emission Control Malfunction.  Do you think if I changed the charcoal canister and control valve if would go away?

ANSWER: Eric,

It could be as simple as a loose gas cap or one of the hoses is rotten or the hose clamp is loose.  I would try those prior to replacement of the valve or the canister.

If the tank is full gas will drain to its lowest point of the system.  It is suggested that you run the car low on gas, under a quarter of a tank.  Then jack up the side you are working on so the gas will run to the other side of the tank.  Remember no open flame or droplights that can pop to start a fire.  Be safe and have a spotter with a fire extinguisher.
