Nissan Repair: 1997 Nissan Sentra Wont crank., distributer cap, nissan sentra

Question
I have a 97 Sentra GXE 1.6 liter. Three times now if you let it sit for more than a few days it will refuse to start. The car will turn over, but won't fire up. Three different mechanics have found "something" to repair and then the car would run until you let it sit for a few days. The timing chain was repaired less then a year ago, starter about two years ago, and the distributer cap, plugs and plug wires were all replaced this year. The fuel pump is pumping, but I haven't found a place that will rent a flow tester to find out the PSI.

Answer
Hi Robert

Engines do not start for 2 reasons. Either it is not getting fuel, or not getting spark. Before we go on, let's determine what it is to channel our diagnosis.

To check spark, remove one spark plug wire and insert a screwdriver so it wedges against the metal terminal inside. Hold the screwdriver about 1/4" away from any metal surface of the vehicle while someone turns the engine. There should be a spark jumping between the screwdriver and metal surface. BE CAREFUL not to touch any metal surface while you do this please! If there is no spark, I would replace the ignition module and check the distributor cap and rotor.

I am assuming that the fuel pump does work since you say so. It would be a good idea to check it anyway. Loosen the fuel line where it connects to the injector rack (do not have to remove it). Turn the ignition on momentarily and there should be a good amount of fuel leaking out. If not, then check the fuel pump or fuse. Also, you may want to prime it and see if it starts.

Hope this helps -
