Nissan Repair: Nissan Sentra EGR system code, egr system, nissan sentra

1996 Nissan Sentra 2.1 Engine surges to 3000 rpms during idle and driving. Have had various "codes" from Check engine light. Replaced the MAF sensor, both 02 sensors, light is back on with "EGR" system code. Recently moved to state that requires emission test. Any ideas or suggestions on how to pin point the problem? Was told catalytic converter is ok. At a loss...

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is probably worn out or sticking and needs to be replaced.  Go to Autozone or Checker and have them verify the code for free and if the EGR is defective replace it and they will reset the code for free.  Then, after you drive the car for three times it will be ready for the emission test.  The car will rat you out if you just reset the code and drive down to get the test while the light is off.
