Nissan Repair: 1985 Nissan Maxima Ignition problem, interference engine, nissan maxima

Question
I am unable to start the 1985 Maxima.  The rotor does not turn  and yet I assume it is not the timing belt because it still turns over. My understanding is that since it is an interference engine this should not be possible.  Is the distributor gear nylon and possibly stripped or are there other possible problems with the distributor.

Answer
Hi Tee -

Although it still turns over, the timing belt still could be broken. Even if it is an interference engine, It will still turn, and damage the valves at the same time.

Distributor gear is steel.

I say it is the belt, however if you want to be sure, it does not take that much effort to undo the plastic timing cover and peek inside while someone cranks the engine.

Hope this helps -
