Nissan Repair: 1996 altima gxe starter, cam shaft position sensor, starter solenoid

Question
I have a 1996 altima gxe auto trans. I had to put in a new cam shaft position sensor/knock sensor. After I fixed that the fuel injector went out. I put in a new fuel injector and when i turned it over the starter kind of turned and then stopped. I'm trying to remove the starter to see what is wrong with it, but im not having much luck. I got one bolt off of it, but the other bolt is buried in the back. Do you have any clue about what might have happened with my starter, it just kind of whintes. Makes me think the gear is spinning, but not kicking out into the flywheel. Or if not, how to get to the back bolt. Thanks you

Answer
Hi Jeff -

Gosh, it seems like everything happened at once -

From what you describe, it seems like the starter solenoid went out. It is part of the starter and yes, you must remove it and replace both components.

The back bolt is a toughie, and it is best accessed with the proper tools. The best way to get it is to have a universal (I think the bolt size is 14mm) 3/8" deep socket, 12" extension (may nee longer), and a flex head ratchet. This will give you the flexibility you need to access the back bolt. Also, please be sure to disconnect the negative side of the battery before starting.

Hope this helps -
