Nissan Repair: 280ZX turbo, running rough, rich, etc..., fuel pressure regulator, air flow meter

Question
I have a 1983 280 ZX turbo, it had problems running when it was parked 2 years ago, and sounds the same now.

It idles around 1500 RPMS, very roughly. The car occasionally has black (not blue like oil, black as in unburnt fuel) puffs of smoke coming from the tailpipe. The exhaust also smells rich at an idle.

I turned the engine over a few times and checked the plugs.

The #6 plug was soaking wet (by far the worst), #5 was wet, #4 was dry, #3 was dry, #2 was wet, and #1 had a dry electrode with wet threads.

The car used to cut out after ~3000 RPMS, and would not hold a high RPM, as if it was starving for fuel. I changed the fuel filter (plugged) and it hasn't started since.

When turning over, the car very obviously struggles to turn over 2 cylinders more than the rest. I believe the #6 is flooding, and then the #2 is also flooding, causing the engine to be nearly hydrolocking.

The car had 38 PSI of fuel pressure, but took 5-8 seconds to build full pressure. It held very close to 38 PSI for the first 5 minutes, and now after about 15 minutes, it is at 30 PSI. I'm guessing either the injectors are leaking, or it is the fuel pressure regulator slowlyt leaking. With the wet plugs, my money is on the injectors.

The car barely has enough power to pull itself onto ramps, please help.

The previous owner thought the Air flow meter was failing, could it cause all of these problems?

Answer
Daniel,

Yes, I think you have several bad injectors that need to be replaced.  You can perform an ohm check on them too and replace those out of specification.  But, from those that are wet I would replace those first.  Also, I think the fuel pressure regulator is fine.  If you have not replaced the filter and plugs I would do so.  Also, if you have a Haynes Manual or factory service manual check the values on the mass airflow sensor as well to be sure it is not going out too.  Most of the time there are several things that cause a problem like you describe.  The car can only take so much so when a couple of things mess up it really runs rough.  But, first replace those injectors.  rockauto.com or courtesynissan.com are good and cheap sources for parts.  Otherwise, check out your local parts store if you need the parts right now.
