Nissan Repair: 1987 Nissan sentra idling problems, nissan sentra, vacuum leak

Question
QUESTION: My car will not run at all when warmed up. It stalls everytime you let off on the gas, But when it finally warms up it runs fine but when your stopped the car runs rough unless your lightly pressing the gas.

ANSWER: Hi Chuck -

I am confused. Your first sentence says car will not run at all when warmed up. Second sentence says when it finally warms up it runs fine.

Please clarify.

The short answer may be to find a vacuum leak. Check all the hoses, even under the intake manifold. Get some carb cleaner and spray lightly around the engine. When the idle improves, you have found the vacuum leak, or at least the general area.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: The car will not run when cold. It stalls when you let off the gas, but when it warms up it runs a little rough but at least it doesnt stall when warm. If you sitting stopped the car runs rough but when you put it in neutral it seems that the idling improves a little, or if when your stoped you very lightly step on the gas the car runs perfect its only when your not giving it any gas when it runs rough. I have check the vacuum lines...they all seem to be good.
Is there anything elce i could check, i have had people tell me to check something called a pcv valve under the carburetor? You have any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Chuck -

Could be the PCV valve - however it could be any vacuum circuit that operates in a "cold loop" meaning that when the engine is warming up, certain hoses have ported vacuum from the manifold. Easiest way to check for a leak is to start the engine cold, and lightly spray carburetor cleaner on each vacumm hose and connection (must do this pretty quickly) If the idle improves, you have found the leak. If nothing happens, then look for a defective component, such as the choke pull off (keeps idle high during warm up).

Let me know how this goes -
