Nissan Repair: 93 Nissan Altima power steering, power steering pumps, nissan altima

Question
My Altima has been idling for quite a while now. However it has gotten much worse. If I'm sitting at a light in gear (Automatic) it idles very rough. If i shift into neutral or park it idles normal. Now the power steering is very rough and squeaky. I've put some stop leak/PS fluid in but worth no good results. I've read some of your past articles. Could it possibly be Hose and/or pressure switch?
Thanks
Kam

Answer
Kam,

Chances are the pump is going out.  I have done many of this age that the power steering pumps fail.  Now, if you turn the wheel left or right at idle, in gear, the idle should pickup.  If it does not then the pressure switch is defective.  Also, if there are leaks then those hoses will need to be replaced.  If you have a rough idle in gear might mean a tune up is in order or the MAP sensor needs to be replaced and the throttle body needs cleaning along with the idle air control valve.
