Nissan Repair: Starting problem, neutral safety switch, pathfinder 4x4

Question
QUESTION: i have a 91 pathfinder 4x4 v6. it started and warmed up... drove to store and turned it off. when i returned it would not start... starter does not make a noise at all, and no clicking from the solenoid when i turn the key over.  All the wires appear to be connected.  the only noises i hear are the relays in the dash clicking when the key is turned and a ticking in the transmission when key is turned. any info will be greatly appreciated. thank you

ANSWER: Jon,

First, do the headlights work?  I am asking since I want to make sure there is enough power to turn the starter over.  Now, with no sound at the starter have you attempted to jump start the vehicle?  The prime causes for the starter not working are the relay, a dead battery or the starter itself.

QUESTION: yes the headlights do work and do not dim when i turn key to start position.  volts gauge shows 12 volts and i did try the jump start with no change in success. could it be a relay or neutral safty swithch, and if so could u tell me where to locate them on the vechicle.

Answer
John,

Yes, if no load is imparted it could be the neutral safety switch or the starter relay.  Check the relay by replacing it under the hood.  There are several of the same kind you can switch out to verify.  If that does not do it it is probably the neutral safety switch.
