Nissan Repair: 87 Nissan Maxima, nissan maxima, excess fuel

Question
My car was running fine I parked for about 2 hours and when I went to restart it the engine started and died and when I tried to restart it I had to hold the gas pedal to the floor and then it started after cranking awhile and when it did start it smelled real strong of fuel and would not idle I had to keep it at over 2000RPM to keep it running and it was smoking black like it was burning real rich

Answer
Hi Dave -

Looks like your engine is flooding out. I believe the 1987 model is carbureted, so the first thing I would check is the carb, possibly the jets got clogged, or the float is stuck. In any case there is too much fuel going into the intake manifold.

Sometimes it help to remove all the plugs and check it. If the engine is flooding, the electrodes should be jet black and moist. Crank the engine to get all excess fuel out of the cylinder, and let it sit for a few minutes. Find the reason for the flooding (overhaul the carb, or if it is injected, check the injectors. Then replace the plugs with new ones, and you should be good to go -

Hope this helps -
