Nissan Repair: 1990 Automatic transmission failure, cv driveshaft, transmission failure

Question
Well my dad was driving down the road there was a loud sound that came from underneath the car when I was going down a off ramp on the threw way and after that the car wouldn't go into any gear. So I was wondering what might have caused the transmission just to die on the road, and is there any way I can see if it's something minor without taking the whole transmission apart.

Answer
Zack,

Usually, when there is a loud bang, and it is indeed the transmission, the torque converter or pump fails and trashes the entire transmission.  That is, unless you turn off the car and pull over right away.  So, if this is the case, the best bet is a wrecking yard transmission to start with.  If it is good install it and drive it until it drops.  If the transmission is weak like it slips rebuild it and install it.  Another source of a bang and no go is a broken CV driveshaft.  If this is the case it is just a matter of replacement of the CV driveshaft.  So, get the car on a lift and check the CV first.  If that is good then it is the transmission.
