Nissan Repair: 04 Altima Automatic - Revving Before Switching Gears, nissan altima, switching gears

I have an 04 Nissan Altima 2.5S with an automatic transmission. I've had this problem for awhile, but it has gotten worse over the past several months. Just before my car switches to 2nd and 3rd gear, it makes this loud revving noise and my rpms jump real high to about 4 (whatever that means) and I think they're supposed to be at 2. I heard it could be a transmission problem, but was wondering if you could offer me any insight on the specific problem at hand. Thank you for your help and taking the time to read this!

If it the transmission is doing as you say it is slipping before it gets to the next gear.  Now, I would change the fluid first along with the filter.  If this does not correct the problem I would take the transmission in for a diagnosis and a probable rebuild.
