Question
hello,

my 99 Nissan altima is not going in reverse all of the time. I changed the filter and fluids (and the old filter had no debris. Still no reverse after initial use.Thinking maybe the valves were clogged and I put a bottle of lucus in it and showed improvement. This all starting after using the emergency brake when parked in a parking ramp on a decline and the car sat like that for 24 hours+. After reading other post I thought it might be something with the brake lines. I don't have a clue?? Your input would be welcome thank you in advance.

Joe

Answer
Joseph,

If the shifter linkage is not matching up as in the car was torque locked from being on a hill and when it was put in gear it had to be forced would lead me to think the shifter bushing might be blown and not allowing the car to go into reverse.  Check the linkage to see if wiggling the shifter forward and back, just a little, will get it into reverse.  If this is not the case I think the reverse band needs to be replaced or the valve body is plugging.  If all else fails have a Cottman transmission shop look it over.  I have had good luck with them on several cars and they are honest and cost less than the competition.
