Nissan Repair: transmission shifting, clutch pressure plate, fifth gear

My trani shifts great until I get to 5th then it pops out every time and if I try to put it back into 5th again it grinds and pushes out again, What could cause this?

The balking ring and fifth gear need to be replaced.  Transmissions just wear out over time.  You are probably looking at $1000 minimum in labor and parts.  I say this since the transmission has to be removed and disassembled and the gear needs to be removed and replaced.  If yours is a four wheel drive it would be more.  Since I do not know the year and model this is a rough estimate.  Also, since the transmission is out it would be a good time to replace the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and pilot bushing along with the rear main seal.
