Nissan Repair: 1999 Nissan Maxima SE stutter, nissan maxima se, spark plug wires

Question
QUESTION: Hi, i recently bought a 99 maxima SE with auto trans and 110,000 miles on the clock. When idling, its very rough. And when driving at speed in between 1300 and 2000 rpm it shakes, almost as if its going to run out of gas. But above that rpm range it goes away or is barely noticeable. Its like a stutter. Maybe a misfire? Fouled plugs? Any help is great. Thanks

ANSWER: Hi Tyler -

Looks like you need a tune up. Make sure you not only replace the spark plugs, but also the distributor cap and rotor. Also check the spark plug wires, including the one for the coil if you have one.

You should be fine after that.

Hope this helps -

QUESTION: It does, thank you. but one thing, i have the VQ30DE motor and it runs coil packs, not wires. what should i do about that? should i get a new fuel filter too? thanks for your time

Answer
You may not need to replace the coil packs, but look carefully for carbon tracking on the valve cover, as that can cause misfires as well. Do the plugs, cap and rotor (if so equipped) first, and then try it.

Yes, if you haven't changed your fuel filter yet, it is a good time.
