Nissan Repair: 1996 Nissan Altima wont start, nissan altima, compression check

Question
HELP!!  We have a 96 Altima that just decided to stop running.  Driving home from church - going about 50mph turned left and car died.  We tried to start it several times - it would start for a second or two idle real rough, jerk and then died again. Did this for about 30 mins and started up again.  Went about 2 miles and it did the same thing again. Towed it to house, changed distributor and now it won't start at all.  It turns overs but won't crank. It has gas-alternator, battery and starter are functioning properly.  It did this about 3 months ago when it overheated.  That time it died, and oil spilled out of the bottom somewhere.  I have been keeping an eye on it to make sure it is not dripping/loosing oil and it is not.  I do know the water pump has to be changed.  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Answer
Mandie,

First, I would do a compression check to make sure there is compression of 100 to 120 psi in each cylinder.  If the headgasket is not blown check for antifreeze in the oil.  I would check the distributor to make sure it is not 180 degrees out from installing it and the plug wires are wired properly.  Also, check the coil to make sure there is spark when the engine is turned over.
