Nissan Repair: belts, nissan sentra, pivot bolt

Question
I have a 2000 Nissan Sentra and have recently started to experience one of the belts making a squealing noise everytime I start the vehicle. where are the belts located and how do I perhaps change the one that is making the noise.

Thanks for your help

Answer
Noel,

If the belts squeal when you start it that usually means the alternator belt needs to be tightened or replaced.  If the belts are original I would replace them.  Remove the front passenger side wheel and inner fender well and you will see the belts.  Get a Haynes Manual for the instructions since it has photographs to show how to do the job.  Probably be about $30 bucks for the two belts and another $20 for the manual.  Basically, you need to loosen the tension pulley for the airconditioner and then loosen the long bolt to get tension off the belt.  Then loosen the pivot bolt for the power steering and the lock bolt and then loosen the power steering belt.  Replace both belts and tighten them up and be sure to tighten the lock and pivot bolts after the belts are tight.  About 1/2 inch of defelection on the belts after they are tight and you should be good to go.
