Nissan Repair: 1987 Nissan 300ZX Electrical Problem/Battery Drain, nissan 300zx, fog control

Question
If I park the 300zx for a length of time, the battery drains and it will not restart. Went on vacation for two weeks and when I returned no start. It will start with a rolling start, as down a hill, or a jump. My local mechanic, who is fairly good at diagnosing electrical problems, said the alternator and starter were not the problem. Suggested I take it to a shop specializing in electrical work or to a Nissan service center to determine the real problem. My car has 135,000 miles on it. Mechanically it runs very well.

Possible causes of problem:
1. Driver's side door keylock is jammed; can not engage power locks from this side.
2. Passenger side keylock does not engage power locks.
3. Security light remains flashing while car is off, no matter how long the car is turned off.

Other electrical problems:
1. Climate control not functioning.
2. Switch for rear window fog control not functioning.

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thank You,
James

Answer
James,

The body control module controls the locks you are describing along with the security system.  If a door pin switch is not working the system will never set and the battery will run down.  If the pin switches in the doors are good and you remvoe the door panel to inspect the back of the lock switches and find them to be good then the body control module is shorted internally and draining the battery.  You should be able to disable the theft system since it is not activating by removing the fuse.  See if the car will still start since the alarm was not set.  If it starts leave it out and see if the battery runs down.  Finding a short is a pain and does take time.  But, if you do it one system at a time you should be able to find the draw.  Also, if you really want to expedite things you can get a volt/ohm meter and start tracing those systems that I have described.  A Haynes Manual is excellent since it has wiring diagrams to follow.
