Nissan Repair: 1996 Maxima climate control, diagnostic mode, intermittent problem

Question
My maxima has a intermittent problem where the heater motor does not always come on in auto or manual mode. (The weather is currently winter here)I have ran a self diagnostic test by pressing the off button on the climate control for 5 seconds with the car running and use the temp up and down arrow to select various section to be tested. Everything seems fine until I scroll to section two and the second digit 5 appears and flashes at a 1 second interval. What does this mean? Could this be the problem.

Answer
Ken,

The airconditoner computer has a code set and the flashing is telling you something is wrong with the system.  This system is quite good and has an internal diagnostic mode.  You will need a factory service manual to access the codes.  The procedure and code list is quite extensive but it will tell you what needs to be corrected.  nissantechinfo.com is a good place to get a factory service manual.  But, due to the age of the car you are probably looking at Helm publishers as listed in the back of the manual.
