Nissan Repair: Electrical problem with 95 altima, pencil eraser, ayars

Question
Sir,
I have a 95 Altima that has various electrical problems.  1) when the car is cold, in cool and cold weather, the heads up display doesn't display, the speedometer doesn't work.  Once the car warms up, they seem to come back online and work fine.  2) Also the blower motor has started blowing at max all the time.  The controls don't seem to have any effect, with the exception that the fan control when set to its highest setting tends to make it blow just a little bit more.   My biggest concern in the speedometer/heads up display.  A local mechanic, without looking at it too much suggested the mother board for the electronics might need to be replaced.  What's your opinion on that?  If that is the case, where can I find instructions on its removal/replacement.  My Chiltons doesn't seem to have anything on it.
Thanks for you time,
Dan Ayars

Answer
Daniel,

First, I would remove the instrument cluster and clean the connector and the contacts on the cluster with a number 2 pencil eraser and blow off the dust and reinstall the cluster.  That should correct the connection problem.  Also, if the connector seems loose I would bend, gently, the connectors so they make better contact with the cluster connector.  The blower motor is probably the resistor cluster under the dash that controls speed.  That should be replaced to fix the blower problem.
